He glanced toward Gretchen’s room and saw the door was ajar and the light was on. Oh, please! he thought. She couldn’t possibly still be awake!
George padded silently to her room and knocked gently. There was no answer, so he pushed the door softly inward and nearly had a heart attack.

He grew weak and leaned against the doorframe, staring, a proud salute to the female form beginning in his pajama pants.
His step-daughter was passed out buns-up on the mattress—arms spread across the bed, knees on the floor, feet splayed behind her—stark naked except for the pair of panties that were stretched taut just below the knees.
Next to her on the bed was her silky white nightie. Apparently, her drunkenness had overcome her before she could get herself to bed. How had she ended up in this position, though? Saying her prayers?
